TALENT SHOW & AUCTION A HUGE SUCCESS
The talent show and silent auction on Saturday night, October
25, delivered a smashing finale for the efforts of our children to raise
money to buy a Gift Ark through Heifer International. In January,
they had a dream to raise $5,000 to provide 15 pairs of working animals to
help families in the world's poorest communities to farm and make a living.
Given that they had never raised more than a small fraction of that in a
single year, it seemed like a far-off goal. But our church family
embraced their dream and many joined the cause. Through Lenten coin
banks, a bake sale, a bottle drive, a yard sale, the sale of pie plates,
candles and plants, and culminating in Saturday's talent show and silent
auction, their goal was met two months early - and then some! They've
raised not $5,000 - but nearly
$6,000! The talent show and silent auction alone raised $1,931. We
give thanks to the many who baked, sold, collected bottles, raided their
attics, shared their talents and donated art. All in the service
of a very good cause. Saturday night's show was also a wonderful
testament to the rich talent pool in our community. The performers
included Bob Webb and Helen Richmond Webb, Mark and Sophie Wilson, our
Bell-Ringers, ChrisMorgan, Sparky Pierce, Jim Joseph, Leila Percy, Dick
Hankinson, Olaf Ellers, Carol & Bill Emerson, Julia
Hart, Addie Beach and Dennis Doiron. A great time was had by all.

What We Do
Governance
The sole Head of our church is Jesus Christ: we seek in our worship and community life to follow in His ways and be faithful witnesses of His work. The ultimate temporal governing authority of the Phippsburg Congregational Church (UCC) is our Covenant Membership assembled in a duly called membership meeting. The vote of a majority of Members present and voting at any duly called membership meeting of the Church shall be the action of the Church.
Month to month, our church is governed by a Church Council, which consists of
either the Officers or their Assistant and the chairs of the standing Boards and
Committees. The Officers of the Church shall be the Moderator, Assistant
Moderator, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Clerk, and Assistant Clerk. The
Standing Committees are: Nominating, Music, Flower, Membership, Building &
Grounds, Budget-Finance, Ways & Means, Hospitality, Christian Education,
Historical Records, and Caring Ministries. The Ad Hoc Governance Study Committee
oversees the implementation of the revised By Laws.

The work of the church might best be divided into four areas of concentration:
Worship, Financial Support, Missions, and Building.
1. Worship
Our Worship experience is supported and augmented by our 12 member Board of Deacons, as well as our Hospitality, Music, and Flower Committees. We have an active Bell Choir,
Belles and Buoys, which often blesses our worship with their talents. Our Wedding Committee sets policy for the use of the church for weddings and assists in those special worship services when necessary.
2. Financial Support
Our Ways and Means Committee raises money for the church (and has some fun doing that!). They set up and staff booths at local fairs and festivals, selling plates, Christmas tree ornaments, Rada cutlery, official Phippsburg Congregational Church wear, and other items. The Budget and Finance Committee is responsible for putting together our yearly budget and for seeing to our annual pledge drive.
3. Missions
Our Christian Education Committee oversees our Sunday School. Sunday School meets during our worship services. We do also offer Adult Education opportunities, and, when the need arises, Confirmation Classes. Our Membership Committee keeps track of the members we do have and is always actively seeking more folks to join our church community. Our Caring Ministries Committee supports the work of Caring Ministries, which includes several active Sub
Committees including:
1. Our involvement with the Bath Area Food Bank
2. Called to Care, a UCC program that trains lay volunteers to make calls on others in the community
3. Information Ministries, which tracks members of the community in other locations (away for the winter, in the hospital, etc.) and helps us to stay in touch with them
4. Milestones, which keeps a calendar of important dates in the life of folks in our community (anniversaries, birthdays, etc.)
5. Grandma’s Closet, which is a resource for local people in need.
An informal Social Justice Group meets monthly for a potluck meal and to support local social justice causes and its own members as they seek justice and peace in the world.
4. Building
Our building and grounds are faithfully tended to by our Building &
Grounds Committee. Our Historical Records Committee seeks to keep and preserve all church records.
In a class by itself, our Nominating Committee keeps our other committees faithfully and fully staffed.
Over half of our Covenant Members serve on one or more of these Committees!
CROP Walkers Carolyn Stackpole, Joyce Wilson, Kiera Wilson with "Scooter" representing the Phippsburg Congregational Church UCC raised over $325 on Oct. 19 to support the relief of international and local hunger.
Sunday School Members Hold a Baked Goods Sale to Raise Funds for the Heifer Project
Our rummage sale on Saturday, July 19, 2008 raised over $500 for the Heifer Project
